Welcome to the first step toward change

From experience, I know looking for a therapist isn’t an easy decision, how do you know or choose who’s right for you?

So, you must be feeling anxious, overwhelmed and like your world is falling apart. You either feeling like that because you’ve experience trauma at some point in your life or your relationship or family is in some sort of turmoil or you’re just struggling in making life mean something again.

If that’s the case, I know how you feel. Over the last 15 years as a therapist, phrases like “will I ever get over this”, “will I ever be able to be whole again”, “can my relationship be saved” and “will be my family be ok” are some of the phrases I’ve heard. My response has always been straight to the point, yes! However, I’m not the expert of your life, I’m here to work collaboratively with you to help solve your issues. I’m reminded of the quote by Helen Keller, “alone we can do so little; together we can so much”.

So, what I ask you to do is first be encouraged, know that this process will take work but know I’ll be here to guide you through the healing process. Second, explore my site, review my skillset, and ask yourself what it would be like to work with me and lastly, fill in the form for an initial consultation. I look forward to talking to you more about the gaining insight, welcoming the change and turning your life, your marriage, and your family around.

My Education & Background

After studying at Florida A&M University and attaining my degree in Psychology, I would work for an international organization. For three years, I organized coalitions through research, education and advocacy for underserved communities. Working with business, religious, political and community leaders to promote wellness and change for community members and constituents helped shaped the way I saw the impact that one person working with another can make. In 2007, I would transition into the mental health and family counseling field. I would work with at-risk families and children providing cognitive-behavioral interventions, early intervention strategies and preventative services. In counseling youths and families, I gained ample amount of experience in dealing with troubled youths, fractured family units and poor school behavioral and cognition issues. Some of the issues I would address were substance abuse, gang involvement, marital and family discord, abused children (sexual, physical and emotional), ADHD interventions, school issues and social/cultural adjustment issues.

During this time, I would gain my Master of Science Degree from Barry University specializing in both Mental Health Counseling and Marriage & Family Therapy. In my studies, learning the therapies of Family Systems Theory and Narrative Therapy would mold my clinical perceptions on creating change and allowing for flexibility in treating both the individual and family. In gaining additional trainings in EMDR, DBT and the Gottman Method has rounded me out as a clinician that can address a multitude of issues for not only the individual, the couple but also the family. For the past decade, I’ve worked at two renowned treatment centers treating adults and families struggling with substance and acute mental illness. At these facilities, I’ve created and implemented trauma groups, ran DBT and family dynamics groups and held supervisory and a director’s position where I managed interns, individual and family therapist. In creating Insight 180 counseling, I aim to create a therapeutic experience that makes you feel at ease with the process of therapy, gain insight into your issues and acquire the skills to make a 180 shift in your life.
